She had no symptoms, no warning signs, and no cause for alarm. Just a routine appointment booked before Christmas, and a radiographer who noticed something nobody else had.
Jane Fallon, the bestselling novelist and partner of comedian Ricky Gervais, has revealed she was diagnosed with breast cancer roughly a month ago, despite experiencing no symptoms whatsoever.

In an emotional Instagram post shared on Thursday, 12 March 2026, Fallon explained that her diagnosis was caught entirely through a routine mammogram booked the week before Christmas.
Writing to her followers, the novelist explained that she had decided to break her silence after some people had noticed she had been quiet online lately. “About a month ago I was diagnosed with breast cancer,” she shared candidly.

Fallon added that it was caught at a “very early stage” and that “the prognosis is excellent.” At first, she had no reason to suspect anything was wrong. It was a “brilliant radiographer” who spotted something iffy during that routine scan and referred her for further tests and eventually a biopsy. She further wrote:
“Since then I’ve had more mammograms, more biopsies and an MRI so they can pinpoint the problem area precisely. It’s been a lot, I’m not going to lie.”

Her surgery is now scheduled for the week after next, and she told her followers plainly that she simply wants to get it over with. In the meantime, she said she was receiving “incredible care” and that “all will be fine” — though she noted she was not engaging with much beyond audiobooks and jigsaws.
She signed off with the warm nod to the creatures keeping her company at home, “Dr Eric on duty. Nurse Pickle wondering when lunch is.”

Fallon, a former television producer, published her first novel, “Getting Rid of Matthew,” in 2007. She has since built an impressive literary career, going on to publish 14 books in total — among them “Faking Friends,” “Just Got Real,” and “Queen Bee,” and “Worst. Idea. Ever.”
As a beloved British author, the news of her cancer moved many of her followers deeply. “Bless her …. I hope she can eradicate this awful disease and survive for a long long time [sic],” wrote one commenter.

Interestingly, on the very same day that Fallon shared her diagnosis, Gervais, 64, took to Instagram himself — with rather lighter news.
Another addressed both Fallon and Gervais directly, sharing, “Looking at comments here, I haven’t seen many that have simply said – Ricky so very sorry to hear this and the worry it must be causing you.. [sic].”

“To Jane, wishing you the very best, this is the challenge of your life, sending love, try to remain positive given the huge medical progress in this area, sending love xx [sic],” the netizen continued.
Others were quick to point out that Fallon would not be facing this alone. “Horrible to hear. Hopefully she beats it. If there’s anyone that will make her smile though in a dark moment it’s Ricky [sic],” one commenter typed.

A fourth person added, “OMG Afterlife, stay positive lovely lady, you have a great man besiide you, lean on him xx [sic].” A fifth wrote, “How tragic [sic] bless you both xx,” while another reflected, “He would be so lost without her, we’d lose some of the best jokes in the history of comedy.”
Interestingly, on the very same day that Fallon shared her diagnosis, Gervais, 64, took to Instagram himself — with rather lighter news. The comedian got on social media to encourage his followers to connect with him on YouTube, joking that it would mean he would no longer have to do press or TV interviews.

He also humorously noted that he would not “have to put on trousers to promote my stuff” either. Gervais shared that he would instead simply pop onto social media to answer questions and chat with fans. He told viewers:

Fallon and the comedian have been together since 1982, having first met as students at University College London. They reportedly moved in together two years later, in 1984, and today share a home in Hampstead, London — along with their much-loved pets.

With her surgery fast approaching, it seems those four decades have provided Jane Fallon with exactly the foundation she needs — and, rather, a good excuse, for once, to let someone else make the tea.
